Declan Morrow

Foundations: A Villanelle

The foundations stuck at bedrock stand tall.

No matter how hard the wind may blow,

not a pebble, not a boulder shall fall.

When the wind blew, down came the wall.

All the secrets, now you know.

The foundations stuck at bedrock stand tall.

This husk of rubble, once a great hall.

Do you think this great structure will regrow?

Not a pebble, not a boulder shall fall.

The forests surrounding, beasts now brawl.

Such a tragedy - how could one foreknow?

The foundations stuck at bedrock stand tall.

The chimney's blanketed with snowfall.

To go unused, abandoned, the once great chateau.

Not a pebble, not a boulder shall fall.

On this once great house comes nightfall,

but does one not wait for dayglow?

The foundations stuck at bedrock stand tall.

Not a pebble, not a boulder shall fall.
